Acme Packet Upgrades Session Border Controller Portfolio
With the increasing popularity of VoIP and unified communications in both small and medium businesses and large enterprises, companies are starting to see the importance and value of session border controllers. To meet the demand for more robust session border controllers, Acme Packet (News - Alert) has upgraded its portfolio, introducing the Net-Net 6300 appliance.
This new product is designed to address a couple of key drivers in the session border controller space. It will meet the growing need for increased throughputs and capacities, which has been driven by new applications, and it will provide a flexible architecture and deployment capabilities within the network.
The Net-Net 6300 is an improvement from the previous Acme Packet session border controller, the 4500, as the 6300 will bring the throughput up from 5Gbps to 40Gbps. This translates to up to 200,000 signalled sessions, 80,000 media sessions and 1,000,000 subscribers at the same time. It has a foundation of 64-bit symmetrical multiprocessing capabilities with an Intel (News - Alert) quad-core CPU design, which is said to deliver more than double the signaling performance.
“The system hardware in the 4500 constrained the transcoding and encryption capacity,” said Jonathan Zarkower (News - Alert), director of product marketing at Acme Packet. “Most of what we see competitively is either in big iron platforms, or in COTS servers that are expensive to maintain and operate, because of their increased power consumption, cooling etc.”
The product will address changing needs in the marketplace, as voice over LTW becomes more prominent and high definition voice becomes the norm in the industry.
