Acme Packet's Session Border Controller Predictions for 2013, Part 1
2013 is underway, but we still have 12 months of news ahead of us. It’s not too late to take a long view at the year ahead and make predictions. I recently spoke to Acme Packet (News - Alert) co-founder and CTO Patrick MeLampy about his predictions for the session border controller space for the coming year.
First up, MeLampy predicts that interconnections between Tier 1 service providers will become all-IP. He is already seeing this happening quite a bit, but he foresees 2013 as the year that companies go “all-in.” He sees TDM being replaced by IP, with the largest international service providers making concerted efforts to make the switch, as laws and regulations around the world begin to loosen.
His next prediction was that Wi-Fi and small cells will complement LTE (News - Alert). MeLampy stated that LTE enables a high-speed access that works well for large, highly populated areas, but LTE needs to be augmented with small cells and Wi-Fi offloads. LTE can be complicated, especially for voice, but MeLampy sees growing interest in the topic, and complementary networks need to be considered to extend the use of services.
MeLampy also sees the IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) 2.0 as a hot topic for the year to come. It started around the same time as both Acme Packet and Google (News - Alert) (about 13 years ago), but it has issues and is still complicated. Decisions were made in the early days that have repercussions now, and the industry needs to address the fact that there are easier techniques out there. MeLampy would like to see a different approach, modeling strategies after, as he puts it, “What Google would do, not what Ericsson (News - Alert) would do.”
Check back in this space tomorrow for the second half of MeLampy’s predictions, involving VoLTE, 3GPP and the death of the desk phone!
