Ikanos Launches Powerful New Home Gateway Chip
Ikanos (News - Alert), a Fremont, Calif.-based company providing broadband semiconductor and software products, has extended its lead in triple play network technology with a new chip, the Fusiv Vx185-HP, designed for home gateways.
“Since the launch of the Fusiv Vx185 family of processors, Ikanos has been fortunate to anticipate the need for speed resulting from multiple, bandwidth-hungry applications running concurrently in the home," said Omid Tahernia, president and CEO at Ikanos. "With our new Vx185-HP, we intend to continue outdistancing other broadband chipset suppliers. Furthermore, we see the adoption of our Vx185 family of processors as evidence that the only innovations that take hold in fast-moving markets are those that materialize as products almost as quickly as they are envisioned."
The new Ikanos chip will allow providers to offer new services beyond voice, TV and data, as well as improved broadband performance using 802.11ac. It has a 5.2-Ghz overall processing speed, and supports multiple home networking standards, a dedicated DSP for VoIP, multi-mode DSL, hardware acceleration of encryption algorithms and carrier-class quality.
The chip has a pin-to-pin compatibility with other processors in the Vx185 family, meaning that CPE manufacturers can reuse existing software based on Ikanos architecture.
The Vx185-HP uses VDSL2 bonding and Nodescale Vectoring to improve broadband performance.
“Vectoring, together with bonding (coupling two copper pairs), is perhaps the most critical DSL innovation for carriers and CPE manufacturers who want to deliver both the speed and functionality needed to power new high-margin, digital home applications that keep consumers both happy and loyal," said Lee Ratliff, principal analyst for broadband and digital home at information and analytics provider, IHS (News - Alert). "Vectoring and bonding are critical technologies for carriers wishing to enhance the capabilities of their copper networks and remain competitive with cable and fiber while being cost-conscious."
